Postgres Enterprise Manager Is Generally Available

EnterpriseDB is proud to introduce Postgres Enterprise Manager, the only enterprise-wide architected management tool for database developers, DBAs and system administrators who are looking to efficiently monitor, manage, and tune large Postgres deployments across their entire organization from a single remote GUI console!

The Performance monitoring dashboards provides user customized metrics for your Server, Database, Memory, I/O, Storage, Object Activity, Operating System, and System Waits each with its own graphs, data, and accompanying alerts to exception conditions.

The Capacity Manager answer questions like: How much storage will my database need six months from now?; How fast is my database growing?; What objects are responsible for the growth in my database?; Will my server be able to support another database instance?; Is the performance of my database getting better, staying the same, or getting worse?

The SQL Profiler can trace and identify poorly-running SQL code in large and complex systems. You can then sort and filter the resulting statement statistics to quickly find your longest running SQL code and then optimize that code for better performance. You can even send the trace results to the Index Advisor and get index recommendations for any underlying tables to improve SQL response times.

Finally, Enterprise Manager offers Postgres Expert, your DBA-in-a-box, to help enforce best practices for your database server configuration parameters, schemas, and security according to best practice guidelines written by the Postgres database specialists at EnterpriseDB.

To learn more about Postgres Enterprise Manager and download the easy to use installers (Windows, Linux and Solaris), Installation Guide and Getting Started Guide, visit the Postgres Enterprise Manager home page at: http://www.enterprisedb.com/postgres-enterprise-manager.

Join us March 25-28 in historic Philadelphia, PA for PG East 2010.

Join us March 25-28 in historic Philadelphia, PA for PG East 2010.

Registration is now open. Sign up before February 15th and receive a 20% discount on cost of registration.

This year promises to be an exciting conference focused on bringing together those who build Postgres with those who are using it. We will
continue to have the core technically focused sessions, training sessions, tutorials and labs, but will augment them with case studies and end-user sessions on how organizations are solving real problems using Postgres.

Unlike learning about Postgres from reading papers and developer's guides, PG East allows users to participate in labs, network and socialize with core community member and end users. The educational and social opportunities will be a great way to bring the wider Postgres
ecosystem together.

We hope that you will join us for this groundbreaking Postgres conference.

For more details on the agenda, and to register today for your Early Bird Special, please visit: http://www.enterprisedb.com/community/pg-east-2010.do

EnterpriseDB TECHNICAL ALERT Postgres Plus Advanced Server July 28, 2009 Migration ToolKit

A Technical Alert has been published and made available to all customers who have purchased a Subscription plan to Postgres Plus Advanced Server.

The Technical Alert archive file containing a description of the alert and the updated software is available at: http://www.enterprisedb.com/downloads/updates/MTKUpdate_Build_27-20090723.zip

Customers using the Advanced Server DBA Management Server will be notified automatically and also receive a Technical Alert email from EnterpriseDB shortly.

TECHNICAL ALERT STATUS
========================

Status: Recommended

Critical - this update fixes a possible data corruption, calculation, search set, or other function that may lead to inaccurate results. The update should be applied at the earliest possible time as it may affect a large number of users.

Recommended - this update fixes non-critical issues that may impede general usage and require undesirable work-arounds affecting a limited number of users. The update is recommended to be applied when convenient.

Informational - this update is informational only for non-critical issues. No software update or patch needs to be applied and issues may be addressed in the field using the specified version currently installed.

WHAT IS IN THIS ALERT
=====================
This Technical Alert is notifying you of a software update that addresses the Migration Toolkit module shipped with the GA version of Postgres Plus Advanced Server 8.3 R2 (8.3.0.106).

The software update contains the following fixes and enhancements:

1) Support for DEFAULT in List based partitions (12521)

Symptom: If an Oracle LIST based partition table had one of the partitions use DEFAULT in the VALUES clause (e.g. PARTITION part_others VALUES (DEFAULT)), the partition failed to migrate.
Fix: The MTK now handles the DEFAULT case for list partitions. All the DEFAULT case specific values are now directed to a default partition child table e.g. sample_part_others.
New Behavior: A LIST based partition table with partition based on DEFAULT clause migrates successfully.

2) Support for Index Organized Table (12573)

Symptom: Migration was not successful for a complete schema when one of the tables was an Indexed Organized Table.
Fix: The system generated table for an IOT table was not being filtered out, which is now corrected.
New Behavior: The migration is successful for schemas with IOT related system tables.

3) Support for public synonyms representing database links (11982)

Symptom: A public synonym representing a database link was skipped during migration.
Fix: The MTK is now enhanced to to support migration of synonyms created for a database link.
New Behavior: A public synonym created against a database link is migrated successfully.

4) Information regarding master DDL file in MTK readme (12343)

Symptom: The mtk-readme had no information for the offline migration enhancement to generate a single DDL file.
Fix: The mtk-readme guide has been updated to include the additional information related to master DDL file generation.
New Behavior: Users can refer to the updated mtk-readme to get information about the master DDL file.

5) Syntax error in VIEW DDL scripts (12342)

Symptom: The DDL script for offline migration threw a syntax error on execution against Postgres Plus Advanced Server if it contained VIEW objects.
Fix: Each of the DDL SQL statements needs to be terminated with a semi colon. The semi colon that was missing for VIEW DDL statements has now been added.
New Behavior: DDL scripts containing VIEW objects are executed successfully.

This update only replaces the Migration Toolkit jar file (Build 27). The core engine version remains 8.3.0.106.

IS THIS ALERT FOR ME?
====================
This alert is for customers using:

- Postgres Plus Advanced Server version: 8.3.0.106
- Migration Toolkit

HOW TO GET THE UPDATE
======================

This update is available through the Postgres Plus Advanced Server DBA Management Server. Click either the 'Check for Updates' link or the Elephant icon which should be colored Yellow indicating an update is available.

If you don't use the DBA Management Server, you may optionally download the update at the following URL:

http://www.enterprisedb.com/downloads/updates/MTKUpdate_Build_27-20090723.zip

HOW TO APPLY UPDATE
===================

Please perform the following steps in order to update your installation with the latest version of MigrationToolkit:

1) Unzip the file update_mtk_20090723.zip and copy it to the $EDB_HOME/updates directory

2) Run the script edb_update.sh/edb_update.bat from the update_mtk_20090723 directory

HOW TO RESTORE OLD VERSION
==========================

Please perform the following steps in order to restore your installation to the old version of MigrationToolkit:

1) Unzip the file $EDB_HOME/updates/update_mtk_20090723_restore.zip and copy it to the $EDB_HOME/updates directory

2) Run the script edb_restore.sh/edb_restore.bat from the update_mtk_20090723_restore directory

TROUBLESHOOTING
=================

If you experience any problems applying the upgrade or restoring the old version after applying the upgrade, please contact Technical Support at:

Email:  support@enterprisedb.com
Phone: +1-732-331-1320 or 1-800-235-5891 (US Only)
Submit a Support ticket at: https://www.enterprisedb.com/myenterprisedb.do

EnterpriseDB TECHNICAL ALERT Postgres Plus Advanced Server July 28, 2009 EDB*Plus

A Technical Alert has been published and made available to all customers who have purchased a Subscription plan to Postgres Plus
Advanced Server.

The Technical Alert archive file containing a description of the alert and updated software is available at: http://www.enterprisedb.com/downloads/updates/EDBPlusUpdate_Build_19-20090723.zip

Customers using the Advanced Server DBA Management Server will be notified automatically and also receive a Technical Alert email from EnterpriseDB shortly.

TECHNICAL ALERT STATUS
========================

=====================

This Technical Alert is notifying you of a software update that addresses the EDB*Plus module shipped with the GA version of Postgres Plus Advanced Server 8.3 R2 (8.3.0.106).

The software update contains the following fixes and enhancements:

1) Support for executing obfuscated scripts (12197)

Symptom: If a SQL script is obfuscated using EDB*Wrap, the resulting .plb file could not be executed using EDB*Plus.
Fix: EDB*Plus is enhanced to support execution of wrapped scripts.
New Behavior: EDB*Plus can execute .plb files containing obfuscated SQL scripts.
Limitations: Result sets & row counts will not be displayed for DDL & DML statements respectively. This limitation exists because the JDBC driver uses Extended Query Protocol, which in turn does not support wrapped scripts on the server end.

2) SQL statements rolled back even if edb_stmt_level_tx GUC is set to ON (9116)

Symptom: If edb_stmt_level_tx is ON, an aborted SQL statement should not trigger a rollback for previous SQL statements. This wasn't working properly in EDB*Plus.
Fix: EDB*PLus has been enhanced to determine if the transaction really needs to be rolled back based on the value of edb_stmt_level_tx GUC.
New Behavior: If the value of edb_stmt_level_tx GUC variable is ON, previous SQL statements are not rolled back if a subsequent statement aborts.

3) Column data gets truncated if it exceeds 50 characters (12092)

Symptom: For columns with data type TEXT with unknown length, data after 50 characters was truncated. A workaround was to set the column preferences using the COLUMN command.
Fix: Text wrapping is now turned on at 50 characters for columns with TEXT data type whose length can not be determined.
New Behavior: If the text exceeds 50 characters, characters 51 and beyond will continue on the next line.

4) Database server messages are displayed as '???' on Simplified Chinese locale (12406)

Symptom: In cases where the default encoding is overriden during installation to Simplified Chinese, the db server messages are displayed as "???".
Fix: JDBC always used to connect using CLIENT_ENCODING=UTF8. Now the GUC variables CLIENT_ENCODING & SERVER_ENCODING are also passed to JDBC allowing it to make an encoding change. As a pre-requisite, please perform the following steps to get your desired messages in the proper language:
a) Add the following setting at the start of the launcher script (edbplus.sh for Linux & edbplus.bat for Windows):
set EDB_MSGENCODING=CP1252
b) When connected, change your encoding to EUC_CN with the following command:
alter session set client_encoding=EUC_CN"
New Behavior: All messages are displayed correctly for encoding & locale specified by the user.

This update only replaces the EDB*Plus jar file (Build 19). The core engine version remains 8.3.0.106.

IS THIS ALERT FOR ME?
====================
This alert is for customers using:

- Postgres Plus Advanced Server version: 8.3.0.106
- EDB*Plus

HOW TO GET THE UPDATE
======================

This update is available through the Postgres Plus Advanced Server DBA Management Server. Click either the 'Check for Updates' link or the Elephant icon which should be colored Yellow indicating an update is available.

If you don't use the DBA Management Server, you may optionally download the update at the following URL:

http://www.enterprisedb.com/downloads/updates/EDBPlusUpdate_Build_19-20090723.zip

HOW TO APPLY THE UPDATE
========================

Please perform the following steps in order to update your installation with the latest version of EDB*Plus:

1) Unzip the file update_edbplus_20090723.zip and copy it to the $EDB_HOME/updates directory

2) Run the script edb_update.sh/edb_update.bat from the update_edbplus_20090723 directory

HOW TO RESTORE OLD VERSION
===========================

Please perform the following steps in order to restore your installation to the old version of EDB*Plus:

1) Unzip the file $EDB_HOME/updates/update_edbplus_20090723_restore.zip and copy it to the $EDB_HOME/updates directory

2) Run the script edb_restore.sh/edb_restore.bat from the update_edbplus_20090723_restore directory

TROUBLESHOOTING
=================

If you experience any problems applying the upgrade or restoring the old version after applying the upgrade, please contact Technical Support at:

Email:  support@enterprisedb.com
Phone: +1-732-331-1320 or 1-800-235-5891 (US Only)
Submit a Support ticket at: https://www.enterprisedb.com/myenterprisedb.do
