postgres user password

Hi, I'm new to this and trying to download PostgreSQL Version 8.4.4-1 onto a Windows XP computer. During the setup it asks for a password for the database supervisor and service account. I have not had PostgresSQL installed on this computer before and never set up a postgres user account but it seems to be automatically generated.

I've had a look through the forums and tried the suggestions of "net user postgres /del" but once the installation gets to the password screen the account is back without any notification of what the password is. I tried "net user postgres postgrespass" to change the password but I get a message saying "the password specified was incorrect, please enter the correct password for the postgres windows account" when I try to use "postgrespass" as the password. I get the same message when I try to change the password or delete the postgres user through Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management.

Is there another solution that I haven't been able to find on the forums yet? How can I PostgresSQL past this password section of the setup and installed?

Try.

net user postgres /delete

and when the installer gives you the password screen, give any password a new account 'postgres' is created with the given password.

Also,

net user postgres yournewpassword

should also work, Just give the yournewpassword when installer asks for a password.

You can also use, --serviceaccount and --servicepassword CLI options. For details see --help.

Thanks for the reply but I'm afraid it's still not installing for me. I delete the postgres user and start the setup wizard. The installation gets to the password screen. I check that the postgres user account is still deleted and it is. I enter a password (to be the password on the newly created postgres account) but when I press Next I get a message saying the password is incorrect and, if I check the list of users, the postgres user account is back.

How can I get this to install? Is there a way of finding out the password as deleting the account and changing the password isn't working for me?

Can you post the content of the installation log file, it would be something like bitrock_installer_<somenumber>.log in the %TEMP% directory as the installation is aborted in between.

That will tell more where exactly the installer is failing.

Deleting registry keys

Sorry for replying late on this.

As i see from the log, Just after creating the user, it fails to validate the user with the same password. As we try to reproduce the case at our end, could you let us know whether your Windows XP is part of a domain? And you are running the installer with a local admin account?

It might be part of a domain but I'm afraid I'm not 100% sure. It is my own laptop and I am the only one who uses it but as I bought it through my university it had to be sent to the computer centre here who set up an account for me and an admin account when they installed Windows XP, Office etc. I'm not sure what else they did or how.

Is this why postgreSQL isn't installing? Is there a way to fix it without interfering with the university's setup (as I'm not sure if I can do this)?

You have to run the installer from a local administrator account. If you don't have that privilege on your laptop, there are other manual ways to install postgresql. Let me know if you want to go that way..

Hello,

1) Download the binaries (not the installer) from our website.
2) Unzip the binaries to a directory.
3) Do initdb to create a cluster (http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.4/static/app-initdb.html)

4) Register it as service (http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.4/static/app-pg-ctl.html)

5) Start the service.
6) Use psql to connect to the database.

You are more or less done with this. Though you wont get any menu icons with this manual install.
