I got the following message while installing PostgreSQL 8.4.2-1 from http://www.postgresql.org/download/macosx :

"Initialising the database cluster (this may take a few minutes)...

Script output:

Script stderr:

I posted my full log over 2 weeks ago, but have gotten no replies.
I've tried the uninstaller, as well as tips from other users getting the "Failed to initialise the database cluster with initdb" message, but nothing works.

How do I completely uninstall PostgreSQL? Including users, databases, everything.
I'm going to try another installation but want to make sure that there are no traces of PostgreSQL in my system.

I found an older version here:
http://www.postgresqlformac.com/lists/downloads/unified_installer_disk_imag/

That one seems to work fine, but as I mentioned it's older. Or should I just leave that one and use it?
Thanks for your help.

Uninstallation Process on Mac OSX: (Assuming Default Locations)

Via uninstaller:

1) In the installation directory, there will be a uninstall-postgresql.app file will be there, executing (double clicking) that will uninstall the postgresql installation.

Manual Uninstallation:

1) Stop the server

sudo /sbin/SystemStarter stop postgresql-8.4

2) Remove menu shortcuts:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/PostgreSQL 8.4

3) Remove the ini file

sudo rm -rf /etc/postgres-reg.ini

4) Removing Startup Items

sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/postgresql-8.4

5) Remove the data and installed files

sudo rm -rf /Library/PostgreSQL/8.4

6) Delete the user postgres

sudo dscl . delete /users/postgres

Thank you very much.

I used the manual process, and then found some other postgresql files via FileBuddy, mainly receipts and probably some leftover files from tke older Mac version I mentioned.
Everything seems to be working fine now.
Big thanks!

The manual uninstall went beautifully until I entered the command: "sudo dscl . delete /users/postgres"

I then got the following error message: "delete: Invalid Path"
